Baby (6 - 12 months)

At this age your little one is so eager to learn everything about the world around him. As you look to start weaning at six months, the introduction of solid food will provide him the energy he needs, and may also help him sleep longer at night.

However, if he’s still waking at night he can become overtired and grouchy, and this can be hard to cope with when you’re feeling exhausted too – especially if teething is disturbing his sleep further.

It’s important to remember that there are no quick fix solutions. Routines don’t always work overnight, so persevere and adapt the routine to suit your lifestyle and your baby’s temperament. If you are finding it tough, don’t worry, you will find a rhythm that works for your little one.

Trust your instincts:
However overwhelming it feels at first, the key thing is to do what feels right. Try to listen to your baby as they start to communicate with you from very early on and soon you’ll develop your own methods that work perfectly for you and your little one.

Every baby is different, so don’t be swayed by what’s going on with friends and their little ones. While it can be comforting to share and hear about others’ experiences, it can be daunting too. Remember that what your baby needs most is love and care, so try to relax, listen to your baby and try and enjoy these very special early days.

As your little one hits the big 12-month milestone he’s touching and tasting all objects in sight as he babbles away to himself or to you. He may even be starting to experiment with his first wobbly steps. It’s an exciting time for all involved – even when he gets into mischief!
