My 23-month-old daughter's new nickname is Miss Nudie Patootie. She loves to take off her clothes and diaper and run around the house naked. Unfortunately, she will also remove her pajamas and diaper during the night and then wake up wet and cold. She removes all types of diapers and pull-up pants.

My 3-year-old son is not yet toilet trained. He is, and always has been, extremely resistant to the idea. Recently he started holding back his bowel movements, saying he wants to "keep the poo inside". We are very concerned about this and don't just want to treat it with laxatives or stool softeners. He sometimes goes three days without going. Is the potty training causing this? Our approach is to simply "talk it up", commenting on how big boys use the potty, how he can't go to school until he uses the potty, and asking him if we would like to sit on the potty. His answer is always, "I'll do it tomorrow." Help!

Expert Q&A:
How do I disinfect my daughter's potty?

How do I disinfect my daughter's potty after each use? She likes to put toys in it sometimes between uses and I don't want her to get ill if she finds them before I do and puts them in her mouth, etc. She's 16 months old.

I'm trying to potty train my 3 1/2-year-old daughter. She will sit on the potty willingly, and takes off her own diapers and underwear. She shows every sign of readiness but has frequent accidents and will not urinate or have a bowel movement on the potty. I am trying to be very patient and very positive with her, but she consistently urinates on the floors and carpets after sitting on the potty. I usually make her clean it up. What should I do? I am very frustrated and out of ideas.

My 2 1/2-year-old daughter potty trained herself three months ago. She simply said, "No more nappies, Mummy." For three weeks she was very successful, made it to the toilet every time and was very proud of herself. I was proud too because it was her accomplishment and had very little to do with me. Now she has been having accidents every day. I don't understand this regression, nor do I know how to handle her accidents. We have gone back to disposable training pants because the mere suggestion of wearing a nappy makes her cry. I sometimes have trouble suppressing my frustration, but I know getting angry does not help. What can I do to help her - and me - through this difficult time?
